Pusa 1121 Basmati Rice was developed Indian Scientists in Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) through the process hybridization over a long breeding process. Pusa 1121 Basmati Rice is known for its extraordinary kernel (grain) length. Since 2007 it has been widely used by Indian farmers as it has better resistance, requires less water, yields better, photo insensitive and matures early than traditional Indian basmati rice.

It is almost cylindrical from middle part and tapered at both ends. In above picture, the top end is fully tapered from left to right in straight line, where as the bottom end is tapering from both left and right side in a curve line but once side is more tapered than the other side.
Length of Pusa 1121 Basmati Rice
The average length of Pusa 1121 is around 8.5mm but we can find kernels having length of 9.4mm as well. The export conditions for Pusa 1121 Basmati Rice is generally kept at 8.4mm factoring overall terms of export order.
Cooking of Pusa 1121 Basmati Rice
It elongates 2 to 2.5 times of it uncooked length after cooking and possesses minimum breadth wise expansion. It does not turn sticky and aromatic which makes it a delicious rice.
With its popularity it has almost replaced cultivation of traditional Indian Basmati rice and also becomes major exporting basmati rice commodity from India. It has also been said that Pusa 1121 basmati rice increased India’s annual foreign exchange from rice exports.
